Why do CNC machining have multiple axes, and how does this affect your product development?

First, a article from your rapid prototyping supplier. Yes, IT’S US, Huachen Precision Manufacturing Co., Ltd. We are a world class manufacturer and service provider of customized prototype parts. We offer CNC machining, 3D printing, vacuum casting, laser cutting, sheet metal bending and other rapid prototyping technologies. High-precision metal and plastic parts, helping folks just like you to accelerate your new product development.

Modern CNC milling and turning centers are marvels of accuracy and precision, it is OK to make prototypes and finished parts with micron tolerances. Now, let’s talk about the differences between 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC machining centers! The first is how do we determine which axis is which?

Imagine you’re the operator facing the machine, X axis is parallel to the front of your body, moving left and right. The Y axis is perpendicular to you, forward and back, while Z axis is up and down. For 3-axis cnc machining, on this type of milling, the workpiece remains fixed to the work table, staying on the horizontal X-Y plane. So they are great for fast and efficient material removal and for making flat or planar structures. 3-axis CNC is suitable for manufacturing simple geometrical shapes, such as flat surface, columns, cones, etc. It’s working principle is through the pre-written machining program, the control system accurately controls the movement of the three coordinate axes to realize the precise machining of the workpiece. Can be milling, drilling, engraving and other processing operations.

4-axis CNC machining refers to the way of machining by adding a rotating axis (usually one of the A, B, and C axes) on the basis of three-dimensional space (X, Y, and Z axes). The role of the rotation axis: 1. Change the machining Angle of the workpiece, through the movement of the rotating axis, the workpiece can be adjusted to a different angle for processing, so that the tool can cut the workpiece at a more appropriate angle, so as to achieve the processing of complex shapes. 2.Expand the processing range, for some parts with inclined surfaces, curved surfaces or require multi-surface processing, 4-axis machining can complete multiple surface processing in a single clamping, improving processing efficiency and accuracy.

5-axis machining refers to an advanced manufacturing technology that combines two rotating coordinate axes (usually two of A, B, and C axes) on the basis of three-dimensional space (X, Y, and Z three axes) to realize simultaneous processing of five coordinate axes.It can process parts with complex curved surfaces and special-shaped structures.Through the movement of the two rotating axes, the tool can be made to approach the workpiece at any angle to achieve accurate machining of complex shapes. It can complete the processing of multiple surfaces in one clamping to reduce the number of clamping, the accumulation of errors brought by multiple loading is avoided, and the processing accuracy is greatly improved. One clamping to complete the multi-process processing, reduce the workpiece loading and unloading and adjustment time to improve the production efficiency. Five-axis machining not only can make the tool always maintain the best cutting angle, but also reduce cutting force and cutting heat, and reduce processing deformation, so as to improve the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of parts.
